Analysis of Vote Share and Margin of Victory of Winners, Lok Sabha 2019

ADR and National Election Watch (NEW) have analysed the vote share for the 542 constituencies in the Lok Sabha Elections, 2019, as elections for Vellore constituency got cancelled.

· The winners of the Lok Sabha Elections, 2019 won by an average of 52.7 % of total votes polled.

· 341(63%) winners won with 50% and above of the total votes polled in their constituency.

· 201(37%) winners won with less than 50% of the total votes polled in their constituency.

· Out of 303 winners of BJP, 79(26%) won with less than 50 % of total votes polled in their constituencies. 34(65%) out of 52 winners from INC; 4(17%) out of 23 winners from DMK; 16(73%) out of 22 winners from AITC and 9(41%) out of 22 winners from YSRCP have won with less than 50% of total votes polled in their constituency.

· 132(57%) out of 233 winners analysed with declared criminal cases have won with a vote share of 50% and above.

· 313(66%) out of 475 crorepati winners analysed have won with a vote share of 50% and above.

Margin of Victory

· 7 winners have won with a margin of victory of less than 2000 votes.

· 3 winners have won with more than 50% of margin of victory.

Winners with Declared Criminal Cases and their Margin of Victory:

1. 115 out of 233 winners with declared criminal cases have won against a runner up with a clean background.

2. Among these 115 winners, 6 winners have won with more than 40% margin of victory.

3. Among these, Mr. C R Patil (BJP) from Navsari constituency in Gujarat won with 52.7 % margin of victory.

4. There are 115 winners with a clean background who have won against a runner up with declared criminal cases. Out of these 115 winners, 7 have won with more than 40 % margin of victory.

Crorepati Winners and their Margin of Victory:

1. 54 out of 475 crorepati winners have won against a non-crorepati runners up.

2. Among these 54 winners,5 winners have won with more than 30 % margin of victory.

3. Among these, Mr. Chandra Prakash Joshi (BJP) from Chittorgarh constituency in Rajasthan won with 39.5% margin of victory.

4. There are 48 non-crorepati winners who have won against crorepati runners up. 21 of them have won with more than 50% of vote share.

Performance of Women Winners

· Among the 542 winners,78 are women.

· Among the women winners, Darshana Vikram Jardosh (BJP) from Surat Constituency in Gujarat has won with the highest vote share, i.e. 74.47 % in her constituency and 51.3% of margin of victory.

Performance of Re-elected Winners

· Out of total 225 re-elected winners 160(71%) have won with more than 50% of vote share.

· 28 re-elected winners have won with less than 5% of margin of victory whereas 15 have won with more than 40% of margin of victory.

NOTA

· The NOTA button instated by the ECI in 2013 gave the voters an option of rejecting all the candidates in their constituency. Out of 61,31,33,300 votes polled in Lok Sabha, 2019, 65,14,558 (1.06%) were polled for NOTA. Out of 55,38,02,946 votes polled in Lok Sabha, 2014, 60,02,942 (1.08%) were polled for NOTA.
