Support pours in for DBWRF from the community women

Ahmedabad, July 2018: The Dawoodi Bohra Women’s Association for Religious Freedom (DBWRF), a trust that represents over 69,000 and counting practisingDawoodi Bohra women, got support from the community women at the Supreme Court of India. Community women thronged, from all parts of the country, to show solidarity with DBWRF. The trust, which strives to promote, encourage, assist and support Dawoodi Bohra women from all walks of life, at present is a party to the Sunita Tiwari vs Union of India case.

At the centre of DBWRF’s collective grievance has been the debate around Female Circumcision (FC) and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), specifically the major misconception that both practices are the same. DBWRF unequivocally state that they are against female genital mutilation (FGM), and thereby condemn any and all practices that oppress or try to oppress women. Since the day DBWRF was formed, they have maintained that FGM and FC are two different procedures, and are committed to working towards bringing about awareness of this fact.

Samina Kanchwala, Secretary of Dawoodi Bohra Women’s Association for Religious Freedom, “We are delighted to see the support DBWRF has gathered on this issue. We are very clear that Khafz is a practice and a basic religious tenet. There are some people who don’t want to do it and we don’t have a problem with that. However, at least those who want to fulfill every single tenet of our religion should not be denied of this. We are confident that the Supreme Court would appreciate that our religious practice is harmless and would allow us to practise our religion as guaranteed under article 25 and 26 of the constitution of India. People have interchangeably used the two terms, which are not similar at all, in practice. FC is a nick on the prepuce. It is a completely harmless process. Now, this nick cannot be compared with mutilation. In fact, male circumcision is far more invasive than female circumcision, because it involves the entire foreskin being removed.”
