Almonds are the preferred energy snack of choice for working women and homemakers in India, finds Ipsos study

Ahmedabad, July 2018: Snacking is a source of energy for majority of working women and homemakers. When low on energy, nearly 62% of women prefer munching on almonds, according to a recent survey by Ipsos, a market research company.

The study found that 95% of respondents preferred to snack healthy at all times, of whom 81% of women ranked almonds as the healthiest snack along with fresh fruits.

Ritika Samaddar, popular Delhi based nutritionist, says, “there is a definite shift towards healthy snacking across different demographic profiles. This study indicates a promising trend towards healthy snacking with an increasing number of working womenand homemakers across Indiaseeing long-term value in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Making small changes in your life like working out regularly and choosing to replace nutrient-poor snacks with nutritious options like a handful of almonds every day can be important investments for a healthy future. Along with other benefits, almonds also have satiating properties which may keep hunger at bay between meals, and hence, help you manage your weight.”

The quantitative study by Ipsosaimed to identify snacking preferences of working womenand homemakers –isit about taste or nutrition or both? The results indicate a growing preference for healthy snacking but taste still matters.

A total of 3055 affluent working women and women homemakers between 21-45 years were interviewed across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Jaipur, Pune, Bhopal and Visakhapatnam.

Working women and homemakers across brackets want their snack to be healthy yet tasty, while also wanting their snacks to be natural and nutritious, cementing the trend seen over the last couple of years towards healthy snacking.

The findings from the survey also reveal that 71% of women are worried about meeting daily nutritional needs. Among cities, women from Pune (99%) and Chennai (87%) are most worried about their nutritional needs while respondents from Mumbai (42%) and Bengaluru (40%) do not worry much about nutritional needs.

Furthermore, unlike popular perception, a whopping 81% of working women and homemakers polledsay that they are aware of nutrients needed for a healthy lifestyle. Mumbai and Chennai led the way with 94% and 92% awareness while respondents from Jaipur (47%) and Bhopal (61%) being least aware.

Madhuri Ruia, Mumbai based nutritionist and fitness expert, says, “women are becoming mindful of staying fit and healthy not just for themselves but for the overall wellbeing of their families. However, fast-paced lifestyles and erratic habits have led to deteriorating intake of daily nutritious essentials leading to lifestyle related disorders. Hence, snacking healthy with options such as a handful of almonds or a bowl of fruits is a good way to fulfill daily nutritional requirements of the body. Almonds are a source of 15 essential nutrients such as vitamin E antioxidants, dietary fiber, riboflavin and more. Apart from being nutrient rich, they also contribute towards heart health and diabetes management.”

The survey shows that 51% of the working women and 50% of the homemakers prefer to cook a snack with whatever ingredients are available at home, thus risking the chances of non-nutritious or unhealthy snacking. While only 2% working women and 1% homemakers planned their snacking meals in advance with purchase of essential ingredients.

Anju Sood, Bengaluru based nutritionist, says, “what you eat between meals matters more than you think. Eating a small, healthy snack in between meals can prevent you from overeating during your next square meal. Healthy snacks should be like mini meals, making up for any nutrients lacking from the rest of your diet, and should be tasty and tempting. However, most women snack on impulse and, as this survey indicates, whip up a snack using available ingredients. Therefore, it is important to plan your meals and snacking in advance and always have longer lasting snacking options like nuts especially almonds which can be flavoured in multiple ways and stored for anytime consumption. They can be jaggery-coated, dry-roasted, or dry-salt roasted as per convenience. At home, work or on the go, a handful (30 grams/23 almonds) of almonds are a convenient snack that can be eaten at any time of the day to help keep you going throughout the day.”

For the majority of respondents (57%) evening time was the most prevalent occasion for snacking followed by afternoon snacking for 42% of the respondents. Interestingly, 88% of women prefer to snack at home with their families. Harini.N.B,Chennaibased clinical nutritionist, says, “with women entering workforce in large numbers and a corresponding shift from joint to nuclear families, food eating habits and regimens have undergone a change. The survey indicates that women across India are turning to snack for keeping pace with demands of a hectic lifestyle. So, having healthy yet tasty snacking options like almonds handy is a good way to overcome the urge to consume unhealthy snacking varieties. Furthermore, with time becoming a scarce commodity, snacking has emerged as a go-to-option for in-between meals and family bonding time.”
